Former Deputy President and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua is expected to call for a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following allegations that party officials embezzled millions of shillings set aside for his homecoming after a recent tour of the United States.
According to insiders, the funds were meant to cover mobilization, security, and logistics to ensure a grand reception. Organizers had projected close to 30,000 people at Kamukunji Grounds and 5,000 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. However, the turnout fell far short of expectations, with fewer than 200 people attending both events combined.
“The planning was chaotic. Money was released for buses, banners, and publicity, but none of that was seen on the ground,” a senior party official confided, requesting anonymity to avoid antagonizing Mr. Gachagua.
The poorly attended rally has raised questions about accountability and transparency within the party. Reports indicate that security arrangements were equally inadequate, leaving the former Deputy President exposed and politically embarrassed.
Another official noted that the flop has intensified tensions in the party hierarchy. “The leadership needs to be honest about what went wrong. If money was misused, then heads must roll,” the source said.
Party insiders reveal that Mr. Gachagua, who had hoped to use the event to re-energize his political base, was visibly disappointed by the low turnout. Analysts say the incident has dented his image at a critical time when he is seeking to reassert himself in the national political arena.
The NEC meeting is expected to address the alleged mismanagement of funds and chart the way forward. Whether disciplinary action will follow remains to be seen.
