As the 2027 General Election approaches, DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua appears to be building a political machine whose value could extend far beyond the presidential contest.
At the centre of his strategy is an ambitious plan to win hundreds of elective positions across the country, creating a political network that could give him significant influence over whoever emerges as Kenya’s next president.
Gachagua has said DCP wants to win at least 20 governors, 20 senators, 130 MPs and 720 MCAs. He has also announced plans to field candidates for major elective positions in all 47 counties.
Those numbers are significant because Kenya’s political power does not sit exclusively in State House. A president needs Parliament to pass legislation, approve budgets and support key government programmes. Governors control county governments, while MCAs provide an important grassroots political network.
That makes every governor, senator, MP and MCA elected on a DCP ticket a potential bargaining chip after the 2027 election.
The emerging strategy, therefore, could be less about placing all political capital behind one presidential candidate and more about building enough numbers to negotiate with whoever wins the presidency.
If DCP manages to secure a substantial bloc in Parliament and county governments, Gachagua would have a political structure capable of demanding recognition, influence and strategic positions in any post-election arrangement.
This would also explain the party’s aggressive push beyond its traditional Mount Kenya base. Gachagua is seeking a national network rather than relying exclusively on regional numbers.
His meetings with elected leaders and grassroots representatives have increasingly focused on building that machinery ahead of the election.
The bigger political question, therefore, may not simply be whether Gachagua wins the presidency.
It could be whether he can emerge from the 2027 election holding enough governors, senators, MPs and MCAs to become the man every presidential winner must negotiate with.
In that scenario, Gachagua’s greatest prize would not necessarily be State House.
It would be political leverage after State House is decided.
