Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament (MP) Ngunjiri Wambugu has laughed at the Democracy for Citizens’ Party leader Rigathi Gachagua over what he termed as a botched plan to visit Bondo.
Through his Facebook account on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Wambugu suggested that Gachagua had overestimated his political momentum following the Mbeere North and Malava by-elections, only to be left unsure of his next move after the outcomes failed to align with his expectations.
“Ati when Gachagua was promising to go to Bondo after byelections, he had assumed that he would win Mbeere North & Malava,” Wambugu wrote.
The former Nyeri Town MP went on to mock Gachagua for what he described as premature political confidence, likening him to someone who counts victories before they are secured.
Wambugu further reminded Kenyans that Gachagua had publicly promised to travel to Bondo immediately after the by-elections to pay his respects, questioning whether the visit would still happen before the end of the year.
“Btw, Gachagua alikuwa amesema anaenda Bondo immediately after byelections to pay his respects?” Wambugu posed.
In November, Gachagua had stated that he would lead a Mt Kenya delegation to Bondo following consultations with the Odinga family.
Speaking during an interview in Embu on November 16, 2025, he said Raila Odinga’s daughter, Winnie Odinga, had approved the timing of the visit.
At the time, Gachagua explained that the trip was meant to mourn the late Raila Odinga, convey condolences to the family, and build bridges with the Luo community, insisting there was no vendetta between them.
However, with weeks having passed since the by-elections, Wambugu questioned whether the pledge was genuine or merely political talk.
“Mnaona iki-happen kabla mwaka iishe; ama ilikuwa stori ya jaba, kama kawaida?” Wambugu remarked.
The remarks have reignited debate around Gachagua’s political strategy and credibility, as critics continue to scrutinise whether the promised Bondo visit will eventually take place.
