The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has moved to clarify its leadership status following widespread reports that Rigathi Gachagua has been appointed Party Leader.
In a statement signed by Secretary General Hezron Obaga, the party dismissed the claims, stressing that Gachagua cannot hold any leadership position until his impeachment case is fully concluded. Obaga emphasized that, contrary to speculation, DCP currently has no official Party Leader.
“Rumours circulating that H.E. Rigathi Gachagua has been appointed as Party Leader are false. The party constitution and the Political Parties Act are clear on this matter. Until his impeachment is resolved, Mr. Gachagua cannot assume any leadership role within DCP,” the statement read in part.
The clarification comes just hours after a dramatic shake-up in which Cleophas Malala was fired as Deputy Party Leader. In a letter to the Registrar of Political Parties, the DCP National Executive Council (NEC) confirmed Malala’s removal, citing a unanimous resolution reached during its September 23 meeting. The NEC further noted that all leadership positions would remain under review until the party formally reconstitutes its top leadership.
Political analysts argue that the shake-up reflects ongoing internal wrangles as DCP seeks to position itself ahead of the 2027 elections. Malala’s ouster, in particular, is seen as part of a broader strategy to restructure the party’s hierarchy and assert tighter control over its future direction.
Despite his removal, Malala has yet to issue an official response. Observers suggest the move could deepen cracks within the opposition and trigger new political realignments.
For now, the party insists it is focused on reorganization and will announce its new leadership structure only after due legal and constitutional processes are completed.
