The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has announced a major shake-up in its leadership structure, effectively firing Cleophas Malala from his position as Deputy Party Leader.
In a letter addressed to the Registrar of Political Parties, the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) confirmed that Rigathi Gachagua, who was recently appointed as the DCP Party Leader, will now serve as the sole Party leader without any deputy. This move strips Malala of any leadership role within the party, marking a dramatic turn in his political career.
According to the communication signed by DCP Secretary General Hezron Obaga, the decision was reached unanimously during the NEC’s meeting held on September 23, 2025. The resolution was immediately recorded in accordance with the Political Parties Act, 2011 and the DCP constitution.
“This appointment takes effect immediately and supersedes all previous positions. The NEC has resolved that H.E. Rigathi Gachagua shall serve as both the Party Leader and Deputy Party Leader of DCP,” the letter states in part.
Malala’s ouster is seen as part of Gachagua’s ongoing efforts to consolidate power within the party after his recent elevation to the top seat. Insiders claim there have been growing tensions between Malala and the new leadership over the direction of the party, particularly regarding its approach to upcoming by-elections and coalition negotiations.
The removal of Malala now leaves Gachagua as the undisputed face of the party, a move likely to reshape the political landscape as the party gears up for the 2027 elections.
As of now, Malala has not issued an official response to his dismissal, though political observers suggest the decision could trigger further realignments within the opposition.
