DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua is once again showing the clearest signs of political panic. Reports indicate that at the end of October, he plans to leave for the UAE. His timing is no coincidence. Within his own DCP party, many believe this is less about diplomacy and more about escaping the heat of Mt. Kenya politics.
In recent weeks, the former Deputy President has been raising political temperatures in the region. From insulting fellow leaders, to hurriedly declaring his 2027 ambitions, to attacking Ndindi Nyoro and other rising stars, Gachagua has been on the offensive. But those close to him insist this is nothing more than cover — a way to create noise before disappearing when accountability is needed most.
Take the Mbeere North by-election as a case study. Initially, DCP fielded Duncan Mbui, only for him to quit in frustration after accusing the party of killing his ambition. DCP then threw its support behind Newton Kariuki “Karish” of the Democratic Party. Meanwhile, UDA has fronted Leonard “Leo” Muriuki, who already enjoys the backing of several local leaders. In short, the United Opposition is deeply fractured, while UDA is consolidating.
This reality terrifies Gachagua. A loss in Mbeere North would be a major political embarrassment for a man who styles himself as the Mt. Kenya kingpin. By leaving the country, he creates a convenient excuse — to say he was not around when defeat struck. It’s a classic blame-avoidance tactic.
But leadership is not about running away. It is about standing with your people, win or lose. By choosing absence over accountability, Gachagua is showing Mt. Kenya what his politics really stands for: noise without courage, threats without conviction, and ambition without responsibility.
