Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s charm offensive in Tharaka Nithi County was marred by heckling and disruptions, in what his allies now say was retaliation for his refusal to part with Kshs 10 million demanded by Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp.
The incident unfolded on Thursday as Kalonzo attempted to address residents while popularizing his Wiper Party. Groups of rowdy youths shouted him down, forcing him to cut short sections of his speech and move to a different location.
According to insiders in Kalonzo’s team, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the disruptions were not spontaneous. They claim that Gachagua’s local grassroots operatives, particularly those working under the Democracy for Citizens party networks, had been mobilized to frustrate the former Vice President.
“We were told in advance that unless Kalonzo gives Gachagua Kshs 10 million for logistics and fuel, the ground would not be friendly. Kalonzo stood his ground and refused to pay, and what happened in Tharaka Nithi was the consequence,” a source close to the Wiper leader revealed.
Another ally described the chaos as “political extortion,” arguing that Kalonzo will not allow Mt. Kenya to be reduced to a tollgate. “This is intimidation and an attempt to monetize politics. Kalonzo will not buy his way into any region. He believes in genuine connection with the people,” the source added.
Despite the disruptions, Kalonzo continued with his tour, vowing to strengthen his party across the country. His supporters have framed the incident as proof of his courage to stand against what they term as “gatekeeping and forced political payments.”
“Kalonzo is not for sale,” said one aide. “He will speak to Kenyans directly, without paying bribes.”
