The political dynamics of the Mt Kenya region appear to be undergoing a significant shift, with President William Ruto gradually regaining ground while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces increasing pressure to prove that he still commands the influence he claims to possess.
In the immediate aftermath of Gachagua’s impeachment, political sentiment in the region largely favored the former Deputy President. Many residents viewed him as a victim of political betrayal, and leaders associated with the ruling administration often encountered hostility when attempting to engage voters. Anti-government rhetoric dominated public discussions, while some artists and public figures linked to government functions faced calls for boycotts.
However, several months later, the political environment appears noticeably different. Government leaders are increasingly holding public meetings across the region without major disruptions. Members of Parliament aligned to President Ruto are conducting constituency activities more freely, while development projects have become central to political discussions.
Road construction, electricity connections, market development, infrastructure expansion, and employment opportunities are increasingly dominating conversations among residents. This shift has created an environment where service delivery is beginning to compete with political grievances as the primary issue influencing public opinion.
The changing atmosphere has raised important questions about Gachagua’s political standing. While he remains a prominent figure in Mt Kenya politics, critics argue that sympathy generated by his impeachment may not automatically translate into long-term political support. Elections and by-elections are often regarded as the ultimate measure of political influence, and future electoral contests will provide a clearer indication of where voters stand.
At the same time, President Ruto appears to be benefiting from a strategy focused on development and grassroots engagement. The region that was once portrayed as entirely hostile to his administration is increasingly becoming politically competitive once again.
As momentum gradually shifts, the challenge facing Gachagua is no longer explaining the events surrounding his impeachment. Instead, it is demonstrating that he retains the ability to mobilize voters and shape political outcomes. Whether he can reverse the current trend remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Mt Kenya politics is becoming more competitive, and the battle for influence is far from over.
