DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua is once again at the centre of political debate, with analysts questioning the real motive behind his recent sharp attacks on key allies of President William Ruto.
According to observers, Gachagua’s game plan appears straightforward: force his way back into relevance by positioning himself as the ultimate gatekeeper of Mt Kenya votes, with the end goal of securing a political “handshake” with the Head of State.
His recent public appearances have raised eyebrows, particularly after repeatedly targeting leaders perceived to be close to the president, including Kimani Ichung’wah.
At Olkalous funeral event, Gachagua mentioned Ichung’wah multiple times—more than he referenced the deceased or offered condolences to the grieving family—an incident that has since sparked criticism about priorities and decorum.
Political analysts interpret this approach as a calculated move. By attacking those believed to have direct influence over the president, Gachagua may be attempting to weaken their standing while elevating his own bargaining power. The strategy, they argue, is to create pressure and signal that he still commands significant support in Mt Kenya—support that could be decisive in future political alignments.
However, critics warn that such tactics risk backfiring. Turning solemn events into political battlegrounds and appearing overly fixated on rivals may alienate sections of the public. There are also concerns that sustained political bitterness could undermine efforts to build broader alliances.
For now, the unfolding strategy paints a picture of a leader determined to remain relevant in a rapidly shifting political landscape.
Whether this approach will lead to the sought-after rapprochement with the president—or further isolation—remains to be seen.
