Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was removed from office in 2024 through impeachment. Many hoped that this would be a lesson to him — but it seems he didn’t learn.
Since his removal, Gachagua has been holding political rallies and making speeches that sound tribal and divisive. Instead of focusing on ideas that unite Kenyans, he keeps attacking the current government and playing ethnic politics. This is dangerous for a country like Kenya that wants to stay united and peaceful.
That’s why Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo is now saying that Parliament should take action again — this time to block Gachagua from ever running for public office. The Kenyan Constitution allows this. Article 75(3) says that if a leader was removed from office for misconduct, Parliament can vote to stop them from contesting any position in future.
This move is not about revenge. It is about protecting the country. We need leaders who bring people together, not those who create hatred and division for their own benefit.
Gachagua has already been given a high position in government, but he misused it. Now that he is back in politics, he is still using the same harmful language. If he continues like this, then Parliament has a duty to act.
Kenya belongs to all of us, and our leaders must lead with respect and unity. If someone cannot do that, they should not be allowed back into public office. It’s time to put the peace and unity of our country first.
