Cleophas Malala is facing growing political pressure inside the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) after leaders from the Mt Kenya region reportedly pushed party leader Rigathi Gachagua to appoint a second Deputy Party Leader.
According to insiders within the party, several Mt Kenya MPs allied to DCP have been raising concerns about Malala’s role and influence in the party. Some of them claim they no longer fully trust him and suspect that he could be working as a political mole who is leaking information or undermining the party’s strategy from within.
Because of these concerns, the MPs are said to have urged Gachagua to introduce another Deputy Party Leader who will share responsibilities and help oversee party operations. The move is being interpreted as an attempt to limit Malala’s control and ensure that major party decisions are not concentrated in one office.
Sources say, after Malala and Njeri Maina’s altercations, the pressure from Mt Kenya leaders became too strong for Gachagua to ignore, forcing him to consider restructuring the party leadership to maintain unity and confidence among his allies.
If the second deputy position is created, it would significantly reduce Malala’s influence in the party and signal growing mistrust from key leaders who fear that internal divisions could weaken DCP’s political strategy ahead of future elections.
The development highlights rising tension within the party and shows how regional leaders are increasingly asserting their influence in shaping the party’s leadership structure.
