Rigathi Gachagua has been openly pushing the presidential ambitions of Kalonzo Musyoka, yet the political reality is that the Wiper Democratic Movement has struggled to demonstrate the national spread required of strong presidential parties. By backing Kalonzo loudly, Gachagua keeps the opposition invested in a candidate whose political machinery may not be strong enough to challenge William Ruto nationwide.
At the same time, Gachagua has consistently positioned himself against the Jubilee Party, which remains one of the few parties with a historically organized national network. By politically attacking and fragmenting Jubilee’s base in Mt Kenya, he undermines the only opposition structure that could have provided a serious national platform against the incumbent.
Through his confrontations with various opposition actors, Gachagua is helping create multiple political centers—Kalonzo’s camp, remnants of Jubilee, and emerging regional formations. This fragmentation makes it harder for the opposition to unite behind a single candidate, a situation that traditionally benefits an incumbent president.
Gachagua’s promotion of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is rapidly reorganizing the Mt Kenya political landscape. While it appears to strengthen his personal influence, it simultaneously breaks up older political structures that could have mobilized the region as a unified opposition bloc.
Much of Gachagua’s messaging has focused on reclaiming influence in Mt Kenya rather than building a national coalition capable of winning a presidential election. This regionalization of politics keeps opposition leaders focused on local supremacy battles rather than constructing a national campaign.
When Jubilee is weakened, Wiper appears structurally fragile, and new parties are still organizing, the result is an opposition landscape without a single dominant national challenger. In such a fragmented field, the biggest beneficiary could ultimately be the incumbent, President William Ruto, heading into the 2027 election.
