Rigathi Gachagua is fast becoming the biggest obstacle to any meaningful opposition unity ahead of 2027.
While he continues to preach “Wantam” and the need to remove President William Ruto, he has consistently refused to commit to any specific presidential candidate from the opposition side. This calculated ambiguity is not strategic patience it is deliberate sabotage.
Kalonzo Musyoka has already publicly positioned himself as a serious contender. JB Muturi has been equally bold, making it clear that he will not be part of any vague, directionless arrangement. Yet Gachagua continues to insist that the opposition should not rush to name a flagbearer, even as the country moves closer to the next election.
The reason is becoming increasingly obvious. Gachagua’s entire political project is built on positioning himself as the undisputed leader of Mt Kenya. Backing Kalonzo Musyoka (a Kamba) would require him to explain to his base why he spent years telling Kikuyus they are under siege and need strong representation at the top, only to now ask them to support a non-Kikuyu for president. Backing Fred Matiang’i would similarly undermine his claim to be the sole defender of the mountain.
This is why he prefers to keep the opposition in a permanent state of indecision. A clear, popular presidential candidate emerging from outside his control would expose DCP as a weak, largely regional vehicle. It would also give disgruntled leaders and voters an alternative platform to rally around something Gachagua fears could trigger defections from his already fragile party.
JB Muturi has correctly read this game. By keeping his distance and warning that Kenyans will eventually tire of the opposition’s endless hesitation, he has refused to be used as a prop in Gachagua’s personal power calculations.
Rigathi Gachagua is not interested in building a strong, united opposition capable of defeating President Ruto. He is interested in remaining the central figure in whatever opposition arrangement emerges even if that means keeping the entire front weak, confused and ineffective. This is not leadership. It is political hostage taking dressed as strategy.
Kenyans deserve an opposition that offers clarity, not one held captive by one man’s ego and regional calculations. Gachagua’s refusal to name a candidate is not protecting Mt Kenya. It is protecting Rigathi Gachagua.
