Nominated MP Sabina Chege has delivered one of the sharpest internal rebukes yet to Rigathi Gachagua, exposing the dangerous arrogance at the heart of his politics.
Speaking on TV47’s The People’s Breakfast today, Chege did not mince words: “Gachagua says DCP is the party for Mt. Kenya people but he should think twice. He must stop playing ‘demi-god’ and dictating that no one can succeed unless they go through him.”
This is a direct challenge to Gachagua’s self-appointed role as the sole gatekeeper and kingpin of Mt Kenya politics. The impeached former Deputy President has repeatedly positioned DCP as the exclusive vehicle for the region, issuing threats to non-compliant leaders, branding dissenters as traitors, and demanding total loyalty. His recent actions including the reported purge of Cleophas Malala and heavy handed interference in by-elections confirm the demi-god syndrome Chege has called out.
This messianic complex is both delusional and damaging. A constitutionally barred politician who cannot hold any public office has no business dictating the political future of an entire region. Mt Kenya is not Gachagua’s personal fiefdom. It is home to millions of voters who deserve the freedom to choose leaders based on performance, vision and competence not on whether they bend the knee to one man’s DCP certificate.
Sabina Chege’s intervention is significant because it comes from within the broader Mt Kenya political ecosystem. It echoes growing frustration with Gachagua’s divisive, ego driven style that prioritises personal control over collective progress. True leadership builds coalitions and respects diversity of thought. Gachagua’s approach isolates, alienates and reduces complex regional interests to his own narrow ambitions.
Mt Kenya voters must heed this warning. No single politician owns the mountain. The region’s future cannot be held hostage to one barred former leader’s demi-god fantasies. The time has come to reject this toxic gatekeeping and demand genuine, inclusive leadership.
