Pressure is mounting within the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) as Mt Kenya leaders push for the appointment of a second Deputy Party Leader, driven by concerns over power balance, trust, and internal stability.
At the center of the storm is growing unease around Cleophas Malala. A section of MPs believes too much authority is concentrated in his office, exposing the party to risks in decision-making and strategic direction. Introducing another deputy is seen as a way to distribute power and reduce overreliance on one individual.
Concerns about loyalty and internal cohesion have also fueled the push. Some leaders fear that internal disagreements and possible leaks could weaken the party ahead of future elections. A second deputy would provide oversight and act as a counterbalance within the leadership.
Recent tensions, including clashes involving Njeri Maina, have exposed cracks within the party and reinforced the need for a more stable leadership structure capable of managing conflicts.
The move also reflects Mt Kenya’s determination to consolidate its influence within DCP by securing stronger representation at the top.
This pressure has now forced Rigathi Gachagua to act, with reports indicating he is sourcing a second Deputy Party Leader from Mt Kenya. Names such as Maina Kamanda are already being fronted, signaling a strategic shift aimed at restoring confidence, strengthening internal control, and stabilizing the party ahead of upcoming political contests.
