The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), seen as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political fallback after impeachment, is fracturing amid reports of State House influence.
Legally, DCP’s leadership lies with Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala, as Gachagua is constitutionally barred from holding office. This loophole has allowed President William Ruto’s allies to reportedly use Malala to steer the party toward the ruling coalition.
Insiders claim Malala has been meeting Gachagua’s Mt Kenya rivals to form a splinter group, deepening divisions within DCP. Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has accused Malala of plotting to weaken the party from within.
Analysts say Gachagua’s lack of formal control leaves him politically stranded. With Ruto’s 2022 alliance with Gachagua now dissolved and Kithure Kindiki elevated to Deputy President, Ruto is laying a framework to storm Mt Kenya for 2027 campaigns.
