Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) is facing eviction from its headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi, after the landlord issued a notice demanding that the party vacate the premises for failure to pay rent.
According to the landlord, DCP has defaulted on quarterly rent payments as stipulated in the lease agreement. Despite several reminders, the party leadership is accused of giving excuses and avoiding communication. “We have made every effort to engage them, but they keep taking us in circles. Mr. Gachagua himself has not been picking calls,” the landlord said.
Sources within the party have confirmed that staff members have gone for over three months without pay, with some reportedly sleeping in the office after being locked out of their houses due to rent arrears.
“There is no money coming through. We have been working without salaries, and even basic office operations have stalled,” one frustrated staff member revealed. “We hear millions are being collected from aspirants, but nothing reaches the office.”
Party insiders accuse Gachagua of collecting hundreds of millions from aspirants and well-wishers, yet failing to allocate funds to party operations. They claim that aspirants were required to contribute Ksh 1 million monthly to sustain the party’s activities, but the funds are allegedly not being utilized as intended.
The financial crisis has reportedly caused discontent within the party, with several members expressing fear that the situation could cripple DCP’s operations ahead of the 2027 elections.
Efforts to reach Gachagua for comment were unsuccessful as his phone went unanswered.
The looming eviction adds to growing concerns about mismanagement and poor financial accountability within Gachagua’s camp, threatening to derail his political ambitions and weaken his hold on the party.
