Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has shocked many after reportedly calling opposition leaders and asking each of them to contribute KSh 10 million every month to fund his political activities across the country.
Sources say Gachagua told the opposition principals that he is running out of money and can no longer move around the country on his own. He argued that since he is the only one actively pushing the opposition’s agenda yet cannot run for office himself, those who plan to contest in 2027 should help finance his movements. He even gave them a deadline — by Sunday, October 26, 2025 — saying that if they fail to raise the money, he will stop engaging in opposition politics altogether.
His demand has, however, left the opposition leaders completely silent. None of them has come out to support or reject his call. This silence shows the deep divisions and lack of coordination within the opposition. It also raises questions about whether they truly share a common goal or are simply working together out of convenience.
For Gachagua, this move seems like a sign of desperation. Once known for championing the ordinary citizen, he now appears to be fighting to stay politically relevant and financially afloat. Asking his colleagues for such large sums each month paints the picture of a man struggling to maintain influence without a clear plan.
The opposition’s silence, on the other hand, suggests hesitation — they might feel Gachagua’s demand is unreasonable or fear that openly opposing him could cause further divisions. Either way, the incident has exposed a weak and confused opposition, one that seems unsure about its leadership and its future.
