Tense scenes unfolded in Kipipiri, Nyandarua County, after Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia was loudly booed by sections of the crowd during a public rally attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to insiders, the hostility directed at Muhia was not entirely spontaneous. Sources within the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) claim the incident was orchestrated as punishment for her alleged lack of support for the party and its activities.
At the center of the storm is Muhia’s financial contribution to party activities. During the recent launch of the DCP, Members of Parliament were expected to contribute significantly. Most MPs gave Kshs. 1 million or more, but Muhia only offered Kshs. 100,000. This, insiders say, angered party leader Rigathi Gachagua, who allegedly viewed it as a sign of defiance and lukewarm loyalty.
“The booing was not random. It was organized to show her that the party has muscle and that leaders must toe the line,” one insider confided.
To avoid appearing directly linked to the humiliation, Gachagua reportedly allowed Muhia to ride in his car and appeared surprised by the incident. However, observers believe this was a calculated move to disguise his role while still sending a clear message.
Interestingly, while other leaders, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, spoke from a small podium, Muhia used Gachagua’s car as her platform. Analysts say this was designed to create the impression of endorsement, even as she was undermined before the crowd.
The incident has deepened rifts within the DCP, with critics accusing Gachagua of employing intimidation tactics to consolidate control. Supporters, however, insist discipline within the party is necessary to keep leaders aligned.
